The Pros and Cons of Engineered Timber Flooring

Engineered timber flooring is a wood product where smaller pieces or strips of wood (1mm-6mm) timber veneer are connected with resins or glue to form the flooring product as image 1.

Engineered timber flooring consists of two or more layers of wood that are glued or pressed together with a veneer to make a plank.

Pros:

  1. They are more affordable than hardwood timber flooring.
  2. Its stability enables it to be installed over all types of subfloors, either above, below or on a grade, and one among the simplest advantages of this timber floor is that it can be sanded down repeatedly and refinished when necessary.
  3. On average, engineered floors last around 20 to 30 years.
  4. More stylistic variations available
  5. Does Not need to acclimate before installation

Cons:

  1. Engineered timber floors are not suitable for floors with underfloor heating.
  2. Cheaper wood underneath is not as strong as hardwood floors
  3. Not as durable as solid hardwood
  4. Can sound more hollow than solid timber

Effective floor care and maintenance methods

1 Use protective mats at all exterior entrances. Do not use rubber-based mats as the rubber may leach into the engineered timber.

2 Never slide or roll furniture or appliances across your floor.

3 Damp mops only, do not use excessive amounts of water.

4 Never use oil, soap, wax or other household products to clean your floor.
